In this report by BBC (linked below), I think Trump is wrongly understood. BBC’s report linked Trump’s speech with the Ethio-Eritrea deal. One can find the report via this link:-https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-51063149?ns_mchannel=social&ns_source=facebook&ocid=socialflow_facebook&ns_campaign=bbcnews&fbclid=IwAR2419UPhwEeh6nXoC4xi4MnnHvqXa78LCy7_Ev-42gjb3fGEKymG3TwWXU&fbclid=IwAR2CiCjS6NeMJdyprzaadX5i_hqXxSo273HUCmj4TwJRJE_SzWLKbncPmm4
Trump was Referring about Internal Political Problem in Ethiopia
As to my inference, Trump has said all about Ethiopia (where he rather referred the country not by name but by its leader, who won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize). There is nowhere Trump referred Eritrea, even indirectly.
But, what was the problem he referred about Ethiopia? How he managed to resolve the problem? With whom did Trump made a deal?
What was the problem he referred about Ethiopia?
As to my inference, the problem he mentioned was the internal political problem surfaced in Ethiopia before three years. According to him, the danger Ethiopia faced was a risk of collapse, and he made a deal to save the country.
How Trump managed to Resolve the Problem ?
I understand Trump’s speech in a sense that he played a role to have blocked the inevitable civil war in Ethiopia due to widening rift within EPRDF.
With whom Trump made deal?
For me,the deal Trump referred was a deal broken to resolve the two rival camps emerged within EPRDF, the reformist camp against the old guard (TPLF and its affiliates within EPRDF).And from Trump’s speech, one can learn that he was to the side of the reformist camp, resulting the departure of TPLF from central government.
